(উত্তর কয়েকটি বস্তুর কতকগুলো বা সবগুলো নিয়ে বিভিন্ন রকম সাজালে প্রত্যেক রকমের সাজানোকে এক একটি বিন্যাস বলে। অন্যদিকে কয়েকটি বস্তুর কতকগুলো বা সবগুলো একত্রে যত প্রকারে বেছে নেওয়া যায় বা দল (এক দলের বস্তুগুলো ক্রম নিরপেক্ষভাবে) গঠন করা যায়, তাদের প্রত্যেকটিকে এক একটি সমাবেশ বলে। গণিতের বিভিন্ন সমস্যার সমাধানের ক্ষেত্রে বিন্যাস "ও সমাবেশ গুরুত্বপূর্ণ ভূমিকা পালন করে।

বিন্যাস (Permutation) : কতকগুলো জিনিস থেকে কয়েকটি বা সবকটি একবারে নিয়ে যতভাবে সাজানো যায় তাদের প্রত্যেকটিকে এক একটি বিন্যাস বলে। যেমন- a, b, c তিনটি ভিন্ন অক্ষর দেওয়া আছে। এদের দুটি করে একসাথে নিয়ে সাজালে আমরা পাই, ab, ba, be, cb, ac, ca । এখানে তিনটি অক্ষর হতে দুটি অক্ষর নিয়ে মোট 6টি বিন্যাস পাওয়া যায়।

সমাবেশ (Combination): কতকগুলো জিনিস থেকে কয়েকটি বা সবকটি একবারে নিয়ে যতভাবে বাছাই বা দল গঠন করা যায় তাদের প্রত্যেকটিকে এক একটি সমাবেশ বলে। যেমন- n. b, c তিনটি অক্ষর হতে দুটি অক্ষর বাছাই করে নেয়ার উপায় হলো ab বা ba, be বা cb, ac

বা ca –এরূপে তিনটি বিভিন্ন জিনিসের দুটি করে নিয়ে দল গঠন করলে সমাবেশ সংখ্যা 3। পরিশেষে বলা যায় যে, যখন অর্ডার বা ধারাবাহিকতা গুরুত্বপূর্ণ তখন আমরা ব্যবহার করব বিন্যাস। অন্যদিকে অর্ডার বা ধারাবাহিকতা যখন গুরুত্বপূর্ণ নয় তখন সমাবেশ ব্যবহার করতে হবে।
